City resident Jewel Crowder, 40, has been arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of 23-year-old Deputy Ryan Alexandr Demby, authorities announced.
The Baltimore Police Department announced the arrest on Saturday.
Demby was in a bar shortly after midnight when an argument broke out between patrons, during which, Crowder allegedly pulled out a gun and began firing, striking the deputy several times.
It was later determined that the incident began at Wayward Bar & Kitchen inside the front door before security removed them, then the altercation spilled over to the area in front of Mother's Grille at which point shots were fired.
Upon arrival at the bar in the 1100 block of South Charles Street, police say that officers found the 23-year-old deputy suffering from several life-threatening gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he died from his injuries later on Friday morning, leaving several communities reeling.
"Our hearts are broken for the Demby family, Ryan's friends and colleagues, and our entire sheriff's office family," a spokesperson for the agency said. "We will continue to keep our community updated and are grateful for your support during this difficult time."
